DOTHAN, Ala.- The Troy Trojans tasted defeat for the first time this season in an 8-3 loss to Wake Forest in the first game of a double header at the Screentech Wiregrass Baseball Classic.
Junior Trevor Tyre opened the Trojan first inning with a lead-off walk. Junior Beau Brooks singled up the middle scoring Tyre from second for the early 1-0 lead.
Wake Forest wasn’t very little time responding to Troy’s run in the second inning. Brett Linnekohl had a two-RBI single to left scoring Allan Dykstra and Mike Murray.
Wake Forest would add two more runs in the third and fifth innings and an additional run in the sixth for the 7-1 lead.
Troy added another run in the sixth when Bryan Miller doubled to right field and scored on an RBI single form Daryl Otwell.
Sophomore Tim Wheeler (1-1) took the loss on the hill for the Trojans. He went 4 2/3 innings allowing six runs on eight hits while walking for and fanning four batters.
Senior J.J. Whetsel pitched the next three innings allowing two runs on three hits.
Miler led the Trojans with three hits in the game.
Willy Fox and Brett Linnekohl each had three hits for Wake Forrest.
GAME 2
DOTHAN, Ala.- Troy used a solid pitching performance from junior Travis Burge to down Wake Forest in the second game of a doubleheader, 1-0.
Junior Travis Burge (1-0) had his best day as a Trojan. He hurled seven complete innings and only allowed three hits while walking three and striking out five.
Neal Jordan came on in the eighth and struck out one batter and gave up one hit. Closer Josh Storm (3) finished the game in dramatic fashion. He came into the game with a runner already on base and forced a bunt attempt the Brock Kelley caught in foul territory. He then gave up a single, putting runners at the corners with one out. Storm struck out the next batetr and the final batter lined out to left preserving the victory.
Junior Beau Brooks led off the fourth inning with a double down the right field line. Lance Miller followed him with a single up the middle putting the Trojans on top 1-0.
Wake Forest recorded their first hit in the fifth inning on a double off the bat of Ian Tomkins. Wake Forest finished the game with five hits.
Daryl Otwell and Brooks paced the Trojans with two hits each. Bart Pettus recorded a triple and Brett Pierce and Lance Miller each recorded a hit.
