LAFAYETTE,
La. – After a 17 ˝ hour break in
play the unlikely scenario of New Orleans escaping from a bases loaded jam in
the ninth inning played out Friday morning
when reliever Ryan O’Shea struck out Troy’s Bryan Miller and got Beau
Brooks to pop out to third, sending the game into extra innings.
The game then took a stunning turn in the 10th
when, after easily retiring the first two Privateers, Troy closer Josh Storm
left a one-strike fastball up to UNO catcher Josh Vander Hey, who hammered the
pitch over the wall in right, giving UNO a 7-6 lead.
Michael Precise led off the bottom of the inning with a
single up the middle, but Brett Henry was unable to get a bunt down and flew
out. Trevor Tyre followed with a deep fly to left and then Charley Williams bounced
into a fielder’s choice, ending the Trojans’ season.
UNO (39-18) moves on to face the loser of the South
Alabama-ULL game this afternoon at 5 p.m. Troy ends its season with a record of
32-26.
O’Shea (3-2) earned the victory for the Privateers while
Storm (2-2) took the loss.
