Troy Defeats Jacksonville To Advance To Winner's Bracket At The A-Sun Tourney

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Troy University defeated the Dolphins of Jacksonville in game one of the 2005 Atlantic Sun Championship 7-2 at Florida Atlantic Field on Thursday. Senior Tamra Howren hit her 22nd home run of the season and sophomore Jocelyn McCallum struck out ten to help lead the Trojans to victory.
Senior Jenny Boyd led-off the game with a bunt to reach base and advanced to second on a Stacey Dwyer sacrifice bunt. Boyd then stole third with the catcher Howren up to bat. Howren then walked to put a runner on first and third for the Trojans. Senior Bonnie Belin then hit a single up the middle to score Boyd and advance Howren to second.
While still in the bottom of the first third baseman Brittany Krbec drew a walk to load the bases for the Trojans. However the Trojans were unable to capitalize as Jacksonville managed to get out of the inning trailing only by one.
In the bottom of the second Troy added three more runs on a Howren blast to straightaway center. Shortstop Caurie Miller walked and the right fielder Dwyer singled to set up Howren for the three-run shot. After two complete innings the Trojans held a 4-0 lead.
Dwyer doubled in the bottom of the fourth and was pinch-run for by junior Paige Foster. Belin then singled to right to score Foster. After four Troy led the Dolphins 5-0.
Jacksonville got on the board in the top of the sixth when Katie Pestrak homered to right with a runner on first to make the score 5-2. Troy responded in its half of the sixth when Belin singled to right to drive in Boyd and Dwyer. After six complete the Trojans led the Dolphins 7-2.
7-2 would be the final as Troy advances to the winner's bracket of the A-Sun tournament. McCallum was credited with the victory improving her record to 19-8. Troy will go on to face Lipcomb later on today at 6 p.m.
