DURHAM, N.C. – Troy senior All-America pitcher Tyler Ray was named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List, USA Baseball announced Thursday on the eve of the college baseball season.
The Watch List features 50 of the nation's top amateur players. The Golden Spikes Award trophy will be awarded live at MLB Network's studios for the second year in a row, with a presentation scheduled for Major League Baseball's All-Star Week (July 9-13).
Ray, who was 12-0 with a 2.39 ERA last season, carries the nation's longest win streak of 12 games into the season opener. He also enters the season as the NCAA's active leader with 27 career victories. The 2011 Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year is eight victories shy of both the Troy and Sun Belt career records.
The Hoover, Ala., native was named the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year last week by the league's coaches and was named to the Louisville Slugger and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America teams.
Ray, who has won 16 of his last 17 decisions, allowed two or fewer earned runs in 11 of his 16 starts last season. The 2009 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year finished 26th in the NCAA last season allowing just 1.23 walks per nine innings; over the past two seasons he has allowed either one or no walks in 24 of his 32 starts.
Ray will be on the mound Friday night when the Trojans open their season against Central Michigan. First pitch at Riddle-Pace Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Following the release of a second, 60-player watch list on Tuesday, May 1, USA Baseball officials will announce the 30 semifinalists for the 2012 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, May 29. The list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total.
Fan voting also will be a part of the Golden Spikes Award. Fans will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalist on Tuesday, May 29. On Tuesday, June 5, USA Baseball will announce the three finalists, and voting will once again commence that same day.
