BOX SCORE
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State used a three-run second inning to defeat Troy 4-2 Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Wheeler-Watkins Complex.
The Troy bullpen held Alabama State to just three hits over the final five innings, but the Trojans stranded nine base runners in the game and possibly ran themselves out of a big inning in the fifth.
Waldyvan Estrada had a pair of doubles to lead Alabama State (11-17) and both were key to the Hornets victory. He led off the second with a double and scored on a single by Darrion Pedro. Pedro came home to score the second run of the frame on an errant throw by the Trojans on a sac bunt attempt by Leo Rojas. Rojas, who advanced all the way to third on the error, scored two batters later on a squeeze bunt.
Estrada struck again in the third with an RBI double to left-center field after a one-out walk for Alabama State's final run of the game. Richard Amion was the only other Hornet with multiple hits after he finished 2-for-4.
Boone Shear put the Trojans (12-12) on the board in the first with his 32nd RBI of the season after Jakob Nixon led off the game with a single.
Troy cut the Alabama State lead in half after loading the bases with nobody out in the fifth, but had a pair of runners thrown out on the base paths in the frame. Nixon and Tyler Hannah singled after Tyson Workman drew a walk to open the frame. Logan Pierce, who extended his hit streak to 14 games, lined a single to right to score Workman.
Nixon rounded third on Pierce's single, but retraced his steps which forced a logjam on the base paths that eventually sent Pierce back to the dugout. Danny Collins followed with a fly out to right field and more miscommunication led to Hannah being doubled off at second.
Pierce reached base all four times he came to the plate with a pair of singles and two walks, while Nixon added a pair of hits.
The Trojans loaded the bases with one out in the eighth following a pair of walks and an error. The Hornets went to the bullpen and Armando Ruiz struck out back-to-back Trojan hitters to end the threat.
Greg Matthews (3-4) worked in and out of trouble all night for Alabama State, but left with the win after allowing a pair of runs on seven hits. He struck out just two and walked three. Manny Rodriguez worked around a wild pitch on a strikeout in the ninth for his first save.
Cass Abercrombie (1-2) was charged with the loss after he allowed three runs – one earned – on four hits in two innings. Jeremy McGowan allowed a run over two innings before Thomas Austin limited the Hornets to just one hit over three innings and Workman worked a clean ninth.
The Trojans host Arkansas State this weekend in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, 7 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday; Saturday's game will be televised live by the Sun Belt Network.
