Arkansas State Rallies Past Troy to Even Series

TROY, Ala. – Arkansas State used a two-out rally in the eighth inning to defeat Troy 16-8 Saturday evening at Riddle-Pace Field and even the Sun Belt Conference series and a game each. The teams will play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
Trailing 8-7, Dustin Jones started the charge in the eighth with a two-out single through the left-side of the infield and Collin Massanelli followed with a single to right field. Michael Faulkner, who was 0-for-9 in the series, fell behind in the count 0-2 against Nate Hill, but managed to squeeze a single just inside the line in left field to tie the game.
Zach George followed with a three-run homer that just cleared the wall in left field to give Arkansas State an 11-8 lead. Arkansas State added five more runs – all with two outs – in the ninth inning to set the final score.
Logan Pierce, who finished the night 3-for-4 and extended his hit streak to 16 games in the process, gave the Trojans the lead in the sixth with a single back up the middle after Tyler Hannah led off the frame with a triple.
Hannah finished with a pair of hits as did Boone Shear and Jo-El Bennett. Jakob Nixon drove in four runs over the first three innings and finished 2-for-6 at the plate.
The Red Wolves (16-11, 6-2 Sun Belt) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning scoring on a wild pitch, sacrifice fly and single to center field.
The Trojans (13-13, 3-5) stormed right back in the home half of the frame with four runs to take a 4-3 lead. Jake Harrell put Troy on the board with a sacrifice fly, Nixon followed with a two-run double to right-center field and Hannah doubled home the fourth run of the inning.
Logan Uxa put Arkansas State back in front in the third inning with the first of his two two-run homers in the game. Uxa finished 4-for-5 with five RBIs, Claude Johnson added four hits in six at-bats and George was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Troy answered during its half of the third inning as Nixon hit a two-run single down the right-field line to score Tyler Vaughn and Bennett. Pierce pushed the Troy lead out to 7-5 with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning before Uxa tied the game in the fifth with his second blast of the game.
Morgan Croft (1-1) struck out the side in the seventh inning and picked up the win for Arkansas State while John Koch tossed the final two innings for his fifth save of the season.
Hill (3-2), one of eight pitchers used in the game by the Trojans, took the loss after he allowed four runs on six hits in two innings.
