TUCSON, Ariz. – Troy second baseman Tyler Vaughn has been named one of the Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball, the association announced Monday morning.
Vaughn, who had played in just eight career games and recorded four official at-bats heading into the week, batted .800 (8-for-10) with three doubles, five RBIs and five runs scored. The sophomore reached base in 10 consecutive plate appearances over a three-game period after being hit by a pair of pitches around his eight hits.
The Murphy, N.C., native went 5-for-5 with two doubles, four runs scored and three RBIs in his first career start – a 26-3 Troy victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. Vaughn, who was perfect on 15 defensive chances at second, followed that up with an RBI double and single after being hit by a pitch in his first at-bat in the series finale on Sunday.
Vaughn, who is majoring in chemistry at Troy, opened the week with his first career hit and RBI against in-state rival Samford on Tuesday.
This is the second straight season that a Troy player has received the national honor after Logan Pierce earned the award last season.
The Trojans open a five-game homestand on Tuesday against in-state foe UAB. First pitch between the Trojans and Blazers is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field.
