PHENIX CITY, Ala. – Shawn Southward, Dallas Tidwell and Corey Robinson all shined offensively on Friday as the Cardinal squad defeated the White 34-31 at Garrett-Harrison Stadium in Phenix City, Ala.
“The guys all tried hard and it was a good trip,” head coach Larry Blakeney said. “It's going to feel good to go home and give them the weekend off.”
Corey Robinson connected with Chandler Worthy on seven yards in the first possession of the game to setup a 55-yard rushing touchdown by Shawn Southward to give the White squad an early 7-0 lead.
Robinson then completed a 35-yard pass to Felton Payton for a score to put the white squad up 14-0. Following the score, Will Scott's 43-yard field goal put the cardinal squad on the board 14-3.
Khary Franklin, who made the transition from receiver to running back at the end of last season, found the end zone early for a touchdown to bring the Cardinal squad within four, 14-10.
Eric Leurinda's 22-yard field goal following the rush put the White squad up 17-10. Kevin Pantastico, a transfer and native of Mesa, Ariz., connected with Tyler Kelley for a 16-yard touchdown to tie the game at 17-17.
Dallas Tidwell also shined in Friday's action as he threw for 171 yards on nine completions. Tidwell's completion to J.J. Harbin for 61 yards gave him his first passing touchdown of the night to make the score 24-17 in favor of the Cardinal.
Jed Solomon, who is competing for the starting kicking position with Ryan Kay and Will Scott, connected on a 37-yard field goal to make the score 27-17.
Southward pulled the White squad within three on a 75-yard rushing touchdown before Deon Anthony scored on an 18-yard run to extend the Cardinal's lead back to ten points, at 34-24.
Tidwell's touchdown pass to Justin Albert for 28 yards would mark the final score of the night as the Cardinal defeated the White 34-31.
Robinson finished the night 11-for-19 with 150 yards and two scores. Kevin Pantastico completed the scrimmage 5-for-5 with 40 yards and a touchdown. After last week's successful T-Day scrimmage, Tidwell put on another impressive performance as he threw for 171 yards on 9-of-12 completions and two scores. Deon Anthony finished the night 7-for-11 with 82 yards and also rushed for a touchdown.
J.J. Harbin, a junior transfer from East Mississippi Community College, highlighted the receiving corps as he hauled in four passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. Justin Albert recorded two receptions late in the fourth quarter to finish with 44 yards and a score. Trey Page, also a newcomer to the Trojan offense, brought in five receptions for 60 yards. Felton Payton finished with 46 yards on two receptions and a score, and Tyler Kelley and Chandler Worthy both caught a touchdown pass, respectively.
After highlighting the day in last Saturday's scrimmage, D.J. Taylor finished the night with 42 yards on 10 carries. Khary Franklin finished with 45 yards and a score on nine carries. Daron White ran hard for 42 yards on six carries, and Shawn Southward finished the night with 137 yards on three carries and a score.
“I think we got a chance to be really good on offense if everybody stays on the board academically and otherwise,” Blakeney said. “We got some help coming on defense and we just got to keep finding people that will play their responsibility and do a good job.”
Friday night's scrimmage wraps up the third week of practice as the Trojans will look to their final week of spring drills beginning next Tuesday. Practice will continue Thursday afternoon and the final scrimmage will take place Saturday in Troy to close out the spring season.
