5/24/2012 6:05:00 PM | Track & Field
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Troy senior Martins Pildavs earned a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a seventh place finish in the javelin at the NCAA East Preliminary Thursday at Hodges Stadium on the campus of North Florida.
Pildavs recorded a distance of 69.06 meters with his second to last throw to lock up the seventh spot; the top 12 finishers earned trips to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 6-9.
“I'm very proud of the way Martins completed today,” Troy head coach Jill Lancaster said. “He came back this season with a mission to be at the NCAA Championships after a tough regional last year. Our program is blessed to have former Troy head coach Bob Lambert volunteering with this team and working with the javelin throwers.”
Mackenzie Howell also competed in the javelin throw for the Trojans at the NCAA East Preliminary and finished in 44th place following a throw of 54.86 meters with his third attempt. Eddie Lynn improved on his seed position of 35 with a 26th place finish in the discus; he threw 51.30 meters with his second of three attempts. Neko Freeman also performed better than he seed as he finished 38th in the 100m dash with a time of 10.72 after entering as the 48th seeded runner.
“Mackenzie, Eddie and Neko got some great experience this weekend that will hopefully carry them forward to next year,” Lancaster said. “Our program and University were represented well today against some elite athletes.”
Nicola Bolla opens the action on Friday for the Trojans in the hammer throw at 9 a.m. He enters the NCAA East Preliminary meet seeded 11th in the region after finishing second at the Sun Belt Championships. His mark of 63.85 meters at the Troy Coach “O” Invitational is the 18th best in the NCAA this season.
Thaddeus Curtis will run in the first heat of the 110m hurdles on Friday at 4 p.m., while Sun Belt champion Larry Henry will compete in the first flight of the high jump at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
