DALLAS – Troy senior running back Shawn Southward has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List, the SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate running back.
The 2009 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, Southward has been a model of consistency throughout his career. The Florence, Ala., native has rushed for 1,781 yards on 348 carries over his three seasons, which equals 5.1 yards per carry. Southward can put himself among the all-time greats in Troy history with 151 rushing yards this season. If he matches his season average from his first three years, Southward would finish his Trojan career seventh on the all-time rushing list with almost 2,400 yards.
Southward already ranks fifth in Troy history with 23 career rushing touchdowns and is within three of third place and 11 of the all-time Trojan record of 34 set by Joe Jackson from 1994-97.
