PENSACOLA, Fla. – Chelsey Williams of the Troy women's soccer team capped off a successful off-season with the Gulf Coast Texans by taking home the 2012 Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Championship on Sunday.
“We're really excited that she had the opportunity to compete for a national championship, and win one,” said Troy head coach Chris Bentley. “It's a great experience for her and it will go a long way in her continued development.”
The Texans took the championship on their home field with a resounding 4-0 win over Aztec MA at Ashton Brosnaham Stadium. Mia Persson got the scoring started in the 21st minute. Ida Gregersen and Shakira Duncan both scored five minutes apart early in the second half, followed by another goal by Persson just four minutes later.
Gulf Coast earned the right to play for the title after defeating Salt Lake United on Saturday, 3-0. Aztec defeated Oklahoma FC, 1-0, in an overtime thriller to earn its spot in the finals.
The Trojans get their season underway on Friday, August 17th, when they host Alabama State at 3 p.m. at the Troy track/soccer complex.
