Shorthanded Trojans Still Finish Second

NEW ORLEANS, La. – A shorthanded Troy women's tennis team didn't let the low numbers discourage them as the Trojans finished second at the Big Easy Classic, despite playing with two less players than the rest of the field.
The Trojans (43) finished just one point behind Southern Illinois (44) for the women's team title in the tournament hosted by the University of New Orleans. Two points were awarded throughout the weekend for main draw wins while one point was awarded for consolation bracket wins.
Troy, who entered the tournament with seven players compared to eight by most teams (including the Salukis), lost their top player Karoline Grymel due to injury on Saturday and played the remainder of the event with six players. Two of those players went on to win their singles draw on Sunday as Candela Munoz Giron and Anja Cosovic grabbed individual titles.
Munoz Giron defeated Marie Aubert of Nicholls State, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the finals of the second singles draw while Anja Cosovic defeated Diana Pirciu of McNeese State, 6-2, 6-4 in the finals of the third singles draw.
The only singles draw not won by the Trojans was the first draw, which Grymel, the second seed, withdrew from during Saturday's semifinals with an injury.
The team championship came down to the doubles draw where the Troy team of Rosaura Ramirez-Vega and Munoz Giron won their semifinal 8-4 over a pair from Southern Illinois, setting up a final against another pair of Salukis, Melanie Delsart and Anastacia Simons.
Ramirez-Vega and Munoz Giron fought hard, but fell 8-5 in the deciding match that gave the Salukis the individual doubles title and the team win.
Also on the day for Troy, Cosovic and doubles partner Olivia Durden won the doubles consolation bracket with an 8-6 win over Abigail Plecki and Gisela Cairo-Baza of Southern Illinois.
After the strong showing in New Orleans, the Trojans will take a three-week break before taking to the court again on October 12-14 at the Duckworth Family Fall Classic hosted by Clemson.
