Five Trojans Named Scholar Athletes; Both Teams Honored
TROY, Ala. – Four new members of the Troy University track and field team head into their careers with the Trojans having already received recognition on the national and international levels.
Corina Cox joins the Trojans after a tremendous high school career at Los Fresnos High School in Los Fresnos, Texas. Cox finished last season ranked fourth in the nation in the discus with a season-best throw of 51.48 meters, a throw that would have placed her second in the Sun Belt Conference Championships last year. That throw also has her currently ranked 26th in the world among junior athletes (U20).
Hayes Grissom gets to Troy after placing fourth in the javelin at the NJCAA National Championships last season. His personal-best throw of 64.80 meters came at the KT Woodman meet in April, and had him ranked sixth in the country.
Lauren Smith experienced great success last season at Iowa Central Community College, helping her Tritons take home the team championship at the NJCAA National Championships. She picked up a second place finish in her main event, the discus throw, with a toss of 45.17 meters.
Taylor McDonald had an impressive high school career at Nordonia High School, competing in the 300-meter hurdles. She finished last season ranked 15th in the nation in the event, posting a season-best time of 42.30 seconds at the OHSAA State Track and Field Championships.
