TROY, Ala. – Joanna Harden set the Troy and Sun Belt single-game records with 52 points as the Troy women raced to a 118-103 win over Alabama-Huntsville at Trojan Arena on Tuesday night.
Harden shot 18-of-28 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from deep and 11-of-12 at the line. The senior guard broke the previous Troy record (45) on a 3-pointer with 6:20 to go, and broke the previous Sun Belt record (50) at the free throw line with 1:39 remaining.
"The first person I called when I got this job was Joanna Harden and I envisioned moments like this," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "I coached against her two years ago in junior college and I know she can be unstoppable."
"We were on a losing streak and I just felt like I needed to take responsibility and be a team leader," Harden said. "I was just determined to win tonight no matter what."
Troy (3-2) shot 54.7 percent (41-of-75) from the field, including 13-of-23 from deep in a game that featured 30 made 3-pointers. Each side also spent a lot of time at the line as the Trojans were 23-of-30 and the Lady Chargers were 32-of-39.
Three other Trojans scored in double figures, including Ronita Garrett who had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Ashley Beverly-Kelley scored 13 with seven assists while Brianna Lancaster scored 11 off of the bench.
Troy's 118 points tied for the third most in Troy history. The Trojans also scored 118 in a win over Furman last season. Troy has now scored 100 points three times in 36 games under Rigby. The Trojans have scored at least 70 in five straight games for the first time since the 1997-98 season.
Troy outrebounded UAH (4-1), 52-45, despite the Lady Chargers grabbing 26 offensive boards. The Trojans, who came in forcing 27.0 turnovers per game, only forced 18 while committing 23 of their own. However, Troy still outscored UAH in points off of turnovers, 28-26.
The Trojans used a 13-3 run late in the first half to turn a four-point lead into a 14-point lead, 52-38, with 2:10 to go before the break. Troy held the 14-point lead into the break. UAH never got closer than nine points in the second half as Troy continued to outrun the Lady Chargers.
Jordan Smith scored 40 points for the Lady Chargers, including a perfect 12-of-12 from the line and 8-of-15 from deep. She was one of three UAH players to score in double figures.
The Trojans return to the floor on Saturday when they continue a four-game homestand against Jacksonville. Tipoff against the Dolphins has been moved to 1 p.. at Trojan Arena.
