Trojans Take Down Alabama State to Open Season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball team outlasted Alabama State 77-67 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Friday. The win was the first by the Trojans in a season-opener since the 2005-06 season.
Three Troy starters scored in double figures led by preseason All-Sun Belt selection Joanna Harden with 12 points. Brooke Bowie scored 11 while Ashley Beverly-Kelley and Kourtney Coleman scored 10 each.
The teams traded short runs in the first half with neither squad able to pull away. With 2:25 remaining in the half, Aissata Maiga hit a jumper that was quickly followed by a Brooke Bowie three-pointer to give the Trojans their largest lead of the half, 42-34.
Troy (1-0) came out hot in the second half. Brooke Bowie drained a three and Kourtney Coleman added a lay-up as the Trojans built a 10-point advantage, 50-40.
After Alabama State (0-1) edged back to make it a one-point contest, Beverly-Kelley received a pass from Harden and drained a three from the left wing to once again kick start the Trojans' offense.
Troy smothered the Hornets defensively forcing 32 turnovers which is the most forced under second-year head coach Chanda Rigby.
O'Neal Session also turned in a solid performance scoring nine points with seven rebounds.
Troy shot 26-for-73 (35.6%) from the field and made 6-of-16 from long range.
The Trojans will host Florida A&M on Monday in the team's home opener at 5:15 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team facing LaGrange at 7:30 p.m. Those with a valid Military ID will receive FREE admission into the Troy Veteran's Day doubleheader as part of Military Appreciation Night.
