MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy University cross country team competed at the Azalea City Classic, hosted by South Alabama, on Saturday morning, with several athletes posting personal-bests.

"We mixed things up a lot better today," coach Jeff Jenkins said. "I'm excited to see the whole squad race together again. With so many people sitting at home, we had several people step up and fill some big shoes. We took a step in the right direction, but we still have some work to do."

The women's squad placed fifth overall in its first 6k race of the season, ending with 106 points. Julia Ostendorf led the team and finished ninth overall in 22:05, while Mikayla Hodges placed 13th in 22:17.

A trio of Trojans finished 27th, 28th and 29th overall, in Sara Lane, Haley Davies and Samantha Smith. Lane finished in 23:41, Davies in 23:45 and Smith in 23:50.

Kendall Harris took home sixth on the team in 24:28, while Keaton Wallace placed seventh on the squad in 24:32.

The men's team saw some quality performances from all of its athletes in its first 8k race in 2013. Sean Kent led the way for the Trojans in 20th at 26:24.81. Jake Bagwell came in 26th with a time of 26:52.53 and Sam Ammons placed 31st at 27:11.80.

Tim Bulger grabbed 33rd at 27:25.56, while Josh Williams wrapped up the scoring for the team in 38th with a time of 28:26.37.

"The effort both teams produced today is what we need to keep moving forward in preparation for the conference championship," said head track and field coach Jill Lancaster. "Coach Jenkins has done a great job preparing these athletes to make a difference. The Trojans are well on their way!"

Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Atlanta for the Georgia State Invitational on Friday, September 20.
