Troy Women’s Basketball Opens Practice

TROY, Ala. – With the 2013-14 season just over a month away, the Troy women's basketball team opened practice on Monday at Trojan Arena.
"We've worked hard to assemble this team and we have a lot of high expectations for them," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "Now the first day of practice is here and we're looking to work to exceed those expectations."
Troy returns five letterwinners and three starters from the 2012-13 squad, including the Trojans' top two scorers in senior Joanna Harden and sophomore Ashley Beverly-Kelley.
Harden, an All-Sun Belt selection, averaged 15.3 points per game last season, including 18.6 points per game in Sun Belt play. Beverly-Kelley averaged 12.1 points per game and scored a total of 376 points, the most by a Troy freshman since 1985-86.
The Trojans will welcomed seven newcomers to the court in 2013-14, including four junior college transfers and three high school standouts. Included in the incoming class is two NJCAA All-Americans in Ronita Garrett and Michelle Mitchell.
In her second season leading the Trojans, Rigby will look to continue to implement her up-tempo style that helped Troy lead the Sun Belt in scoring a season ago at 70.2 points per game.
Troy opens the 2013-14 season with a home exhibition against West Florida on October 28. The regular season opens on November 8 at Alabama State before Troy hosts its regular season home opener on November 11 against Florida A&M.
For the second straight season an SEC will visit Trojan Arena when Florida makes the trip to the second-year facility on December 4. The game marks the first in tough December that includes games at Tennessee and Alabama.
The Trojans again face a double round-robin Sun Belt schedule that allows fans to see every conference team inside Trojan Arena. The Sun Belt schedule starts on January 1 at Georgia State with the home conference slate beginning on January 4 with WKU.
