SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy women's basketball team couldn't win its third straight game as Texas State used late runs in regulation and overtime to take an 87-82 win at Strahan Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
Troy (6-13, 2-6) was looking to win three straight for the first time since 2009-10, but couldn't hold on to a late lead and will now enter a seven-day break after its second road overtime loss of the season (at Alabama).
After trailing by as many 10 early, Troy built a seven-point lead with 6:00 to go and held the lead until Texas State tied the game with 15 seconds remaining. Texas State (7-11, 4-3) scored the final four points of regulation and forced overtime after Joanna Harden's baseline jumper didn't fall at the buzzer.
Troy led by four, 82-78, with 2:33 to go in overtime, but didn't score again as Texas State closed on a 9-0 run and picked up the win. The Trojans missed their last six field goals of overtime and their last three of regulation.
Harden led Troy with 21 points, but struggled to find her shot in an 8-of-32 shooting effort. Ashley Beverly-Kelley had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, including 3-of-5 from long range. Ronita Garrett also had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, despite sitting most of the second half with foul trouble.
Foul trouble plagued the Troy forwards for most of the game as Texas State took more than twice as many free throws as Troy. The Bobcats went 25-of-42 from the line while Troy was 15-of-20.
The Bobcats were in the bonus with 13:46 to go in the second half, and led by as many as seven soon after that. The Trojans then scored 19 of the next 24 points and took their own seven-point lead.
Erin Peoples led Texas State with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting while the Bobcats' top player, Ashley Ezeh, scored 14 with 11 rebounds. Ezeh fouled out with 1:16, but the Bobcats responded with their four straight points to force overtime.
Kourtney Coleman was a fourth Trojan in double figures with 11 points as Troy shot 37 percent (30-of-82) overall to Texas State's 39 percent (29-of-75). Troy took care of the ball for the second straight game, committing just 12 turnovers, but Texas State had just nine.
The Trojans return the court next Saturday when Sun Belt leader Arkansas State visits Trojan Arena at 5:15 p.m. The game is the first of a doubleheader with the Troy men's basketball team.
Troy's Baseball/Softball Fan Day will take place between the games. A special coupon will be made available through Troy's social media network that allows FREE admission to the basketball game.
