Maiga Leads Huge Comeback as Troy Wins
11/21/2014 3:28:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – Aissata Maiga drove the baseline and found a wide open Lauren Day under the basket with four seconds remaining as Troy completed its comeback in an 80-78 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Friday afternoon at Trojan Arena.
Troy (1-2) was down by 20 points, 68-48, with 7:26 to go when things finally started to click. Maiga started the ensuing run with a three-point play, and Day converted another just 20 seconds later. Over the next five minutes Troy went on a 22-2 run that tied the score at 70-70 with 2:49 to go.
Maiga came off the bench and finished with career-highs of 19 points and eight rebounds, seven of them offensive. Day, who did not play in either of Troy's first two games, had five points and five rebounds in nine minutes. Maiga also had three assists, including the game-winner, and a team-high four steals.
The two sides went back-and-forth for the final two-plus minutes until Troy got the ball in a tie game with 32 seconds to go. Troy head coach Chanda Rigby did not call a timeout and instead got the ball in the hot hand. Maiga caught it in the right corner, drove baseline and forced the defense to rotate. That left a wide-open Day under the basket and Maiga found her for the easy layup.
Ashley Beverly-Kelley was also a big part of the Troy comeback as she scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half. Ronita Garrett was also in double figures with 11 points, but did not play the final eight minutes as a productive Day stayed on the floor.
The Trojans faced the big deficit because they shot just 27 percent in the first half, despite having good looks at the basket that simply wouldn't fall. Southeastern Louisiana (1-2), on the other hand, shot 55 percent in the first half.
"I don't ever remember felling that out of control as a coach before," Rigby said. "It was like nothing we did was right and everything they did was right. We were a step too slow on everything we tried to do and we just weren't gelling. It was a train wreck.
"I'll give the girls credit. The comeback was more than coaching adjustments; it was their desire and heart. We made a few adjustments, but we had already tried everything. They were maybe getting a little tired and we forced some turnovers that led to points."
The Lions ended the game with 22 turnovers, including eight in the final eight minutes. Troy, who averaged 26.0 turnovers in two games last weekend, had just 14 on Friday. The Trojans also dominated in the paint, outscoring Southeaster 56-30 down low, despite outrebounding the Lions by just one, 43-42.
Thanks to the eight minute stretch to end the game, Troy finished at 42 percent shooting (34-of-82), but was just 1-of-13 from deep. Southeastern finished at 46 percent overall (29-of-63) and hit 8-of-16 from deep. However, all of those 3-pointerts came while Southeastern was building its lead, and the Lions did not make a trey in the final 9:44 of the game.
Nanna Pool led the Lions with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Peaches Anderson hit four of the 3-pointers and finished with 15 points while Elizabeth Styles had 12 points. The Lions relied heavily on their starting five as the Troy bench outscored Southeastern's, 38-13.
The Trojans return to the floor on Monday when they travel to take on Florida A&M at 6 p.m. CST at the Al Lawson Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
