Troy Can't Sustain Early Success in Home Loss
11/30/2014 4:59:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team started well, but couldn't sustain an early run in an 83-80 loss to Savannah State at Trojan Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Troy (2-3) opened the game on a 24-9 run, making 11 of its first 20 shots, but couldn't hold on to lead as the Lady Tigers started to chip away. Troy had a six-minutes scoreless stretch later in the first half, and Savannah State (3-1) cut the lead down to six by halftime.
Ronita Garrett posted her fourth double-double in five games this season for Troy as she posted 21 points and 14 rebounds, including 12 points and 10 rebounds in the first half. Ashley Beverly-Kelley, coming off the bench for the first time this season, scored a team-high 22 points, including 18 in the second half, for the Trojans.
"In the first four or five minutes I think we played better than we have all year," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "That's encouraging but we've got to be able to hold the rope. Some of the players that played so well in the first half made a lot of mistakes in the second half."
The Trojans committed 13 of their 24 turnovers in the second half and Savannah State scored 16 points off of those second-half miscues. On the other hand, Troy scored just six points off of seven Savannah State turnovers in the second half.
The Lady Tigers controlled most of the second half and took the lead with 14:24 to go. Savannah State led by as many eight points with 3:02 remaining, but Troy cut that lead down to one possession, 78-76, on a pair Kourtney Coleman free throws with 1:07 to go. Coleman had season highs with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Savannah State missed three free throws in the final 15 seconds, allowing Troy a chance at a tying 3-pointer on the final possession. However, Rachel Reid's attempt with four seconds remaining was off the mark and Savannah State got its second win over Troy in as many seasons.
Reid and Brianna Lancaster were the final of five Trojans in double figures as each scored 10 points. The Trojans outrebounded the Lady Tigers, 46-36, but Savannah State owned the points in the paint battle, 58-38. Kristen Emerson posted eight rebounds for Troy and had a career-high seven assists.
Ezinne Kalu, the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, led Savannah State with 24 points. Jasmine Norman scored 16 of her 17 points in the second half and posted a double-double for the Lady Tigers with 11 rebounds.
The Trojans return to the court on Wednesday when they host Samford at 7 p.m. at Trojan Arena. The Bulldogs are coming off of a win over defending Big 10 champion Penn State on Sunday.
