Trojans Drop Tight Sun Belt Opener
12/30/2014 8:01:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team couldn't complete a second straight late comeback and fell to Texas State, 74-72, at Trojan Arena in Tuesday night's Sun Belt opener.
Troy (5-5, 0-1) got 32 points from Ashley Beverly-Kelley, including 17 in the second half, but it wasn't enough as Texas State led nearly the entire way. However, the Bobcats never led by more than eight points, and held a seven-point lead, 68-61, with 2:21 to go.
The Trojans then went on a 9-3 run to get within one, 71-70, with 41 seconds to go. However, Troy never could take the lead down the stretch.
"We played well at times," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "But the main thing is that when they weren't playing well, we didn't capitalize off of it. We were making mistakes behind their mistake. It was a very even game."
The Trojans had the ball three times, within one possession, in the final 30 seconds. In those three possessions, the Trojans had a turnover, then a missed 3-pointer, but the final time Beverly-Kelley was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. That came with 3.8 seconds remaining and Texas State holding a 73-70 lead.
Beverly-Kelley, who also dished out a team-high five assists, made the first and last of three free throws, but missed the second. Texas State then hit one of two and Troy couldn't get a half court shot up in time as Texas State (6-4, 1-0) took yet another close meeting between the two teams.
The Bobcats, who joined the Sun Belt last season, have won all three meetings in the series history by a combined 10 points.
The game was even statistically as Texas State outrebounded Troy, 47-46, but Troy won the turnover battle, 18-15. Troy shot 37 percent (29-of-79) on the night while Texas State hit 42 percent (29-of-69). Troy hit eight 3-pointers, four from Beverly-Kelley, while Texas State made six. Troy took just eight free throws, all by Beverly-Kelley who went 6-of-8. The Bobcats were 10-of-16 at the line.
Aissata Maiga and Kourtney Coleman each finished with 10 points to round out a trio of Trojans in double figures. Coleman scored all 10 of her points in the first eight minutes of a game that started with a quick pace. Texas State led 16-15 at the first media timeout, but both teams cooled from there.
Texas State was led by Erin Peoples who scored 17 points with 13 rebounds and also posted a team-high six assists. Three other Bobcats scored in double figures with Ayriel Anderson scored 15.
Kristen Emerson and Ronita Garrett led the Trojans on the glass with 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Garrett fell just two points short of her fourth straight double-double. Emerson, who missed the previous three games with an injury, also tied a career-high with three blocks in the game.
The Trojans return to the court on Saturday when they travel to take on UL Lafayette at the Cajundome at 5 p.m. The Ragin' Cajuns lost at UALR on Tuesday night in their conference opener.
