TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team (2-2-1) fell to in-state rival Alabama (5-0), 7-1, on Sunday afternoon in front of a record crowd of 2,078 at the newly renovated Troy Softball Complex.
"We had some great teams from around the weekend including No. 6 Alabama," said head coach Melanie Davis. "We had the house packed, and had an even bigger crowd than we had wished for. As a result, we're just extremely excited. We can't say enough about the great fans that came out to support Troy."
2,078 fans packed the Troy Softball Complex, shattering the previous record of 1,351 set in 2011, also against Alabama.
Alabama struck first with four runs in the top of the third inning. The Crimson Tide led the inning off with a double and drew a walk before Danielle Richard drove in two on a single. Danae Hays capped off the inning with a two-run home run in the next at-bat.
Troy cut the lead to just three runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Michelle Phelps, driving in Leah Brundidge.Â
The Crimson Tide would add three more, with one coming in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Jaycee Affeldt took the loss for the Trojans after allowing five earned runs on eight hits in seven innings. She also struck out six batters on the day.
Alabama's Jaclyn Traina got the win with a complete game three-hitter, including 14 strikeouts.Â
Next up for the Trojans is a trip to Jacksonville, Fla., for the North Florida Invitational. The Trojans will take on Southern Illinois, North Florida, Savannah State and Quinnipiac on the weekend.
