Cold-Shooting Trojans Drop Close Game
1/31/2015 8:06:00 PM | Basketball (W)
ARLINGTON, Texas – Despite shooting less than 28 percent, the Troy women's basketball team had chances to win in a 70-67 loss to UT Arlington at the College Park Center on Saturday night.
Troy (12-8, 7-4) remains in third in the Sun Belt standings despite the loss, but had many chances to pick up the win. The Trojans forced 31 UT Arlington turnovers, but scored just 17 points off of them thanks to 21-of-76 shooting (28 percent) on the night.
The Trojans trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, but eventually cut it down to one possession 64-62 with 2:19 to go. Troy had possession, down by one, 68-67 with 35 seconds to go, but came up empty.
Troy also had the final possession of the game, but Ashley Beverly-Kelley and Lacey Buchanon both missed tough 3-point attempts. Beverly-Kelley led the Trojans with 22 points, but was just 5-of-21 shooting.
Ronita Garrett posted her fourth straight double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She also recorded six of Troy's 18 steals, 12 of which game in the first half.
"Our biggest problem was scoring with numbers," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "We had 10 chances to score on numbers in the first half that we missed. Van Dijk also played well for them and they used their size really well."
Troy forced UTA into 20 turnovers in the first half alone, but shot just 19 percent (6-of-32) from the floor. The Mavericks used a 14-0 run to take a 25-11 lead, but the Trojans closed on a 10-0 run and went into the half down 25-21.
UT Arlington (11-9, 5-6) got 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting from 6-foot-5 Rebekah Van Dijk. She also posted a game-high 12 rebounds, including six offensively. LaShanda Green scored 14 points, including 8-of-8 from the line. She hit two clutch free throws with 7.9 seconds to go that pushed the Mavericks' lead from one to three points.
Both teams shot well from line all night as Troy was 19-of-21 and UTA was 14-of-17. Both sides also hit six 3-pointers, including two from Troy's Aissata Maiga who now has four in her career. Maiga was the third and final Trojan in double figures as she scored 10 points.
The Trojans return to the court on Thursday when they travel to Arkansas State for a 5 p.m. contest at the Convocation Center.
