Cross Country Competes at Sun Belt Conference Championship Meet
11/1/2015 6:39:00 PM | Cross Country
HAMPTON, Georgia – The Troy men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up competition this morning at the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Championship hosted by Georgia State at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Georgia. The women's team improved on their finish at last year's meet by taking eighth out of 11 teams in a tightly contested race, while the men took ninth.
"We had a real opportunity to improve substantially at the conference meet this year, so the overall result was disappointing," head coach Elliott Blount said. "The success and progress we've made this season simply didn't show on the course today."
In the women's 5k, junior Samantha Smith finished first for the Trojans, followed by sophomore Sara Zylstra. Only eight points separated Troy's women from fifth-place Little Rock. The men's team was led through the 8k race by freshman Ryan DeGale.
Overall, South Alabama claimed its first women's cross country team title since 1988, while UT Arlington claimed its second men's cross country team title in the past three years.
