Trojans Fall at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Arkansas – The Troy women's basketball team fell victim to a big first-half run in a 91-72 loss to Arkansas State at the Convocation Center on Thursday night.
Troy (12-9, 7-5) opened with a 12-6 lead, but missed its next 10 shots from the field as Arkansas State went on a 20-2 run to pull ahead 26-14. The Red Wolves went on to shoot 54 percent in the first half (19-of-35) as they built 49-27 lead at the break that Troy couldn't overcome.
Ashley Beverly-Kelley had a game-high 26 points, but shot just 2-of-9 in the first half. She started the second half 7-of-8 but Troy could never get any closer than within 14 points in the second half.
Ronita Garrett scored 10 in the first half to help keep Troy from falling down even further in the opening frame. The senior finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, making her the first person in Troy's Division I history to post five straight double-doubles.
Lacey Buchanon was the third Trojan to score in double figures as she posted 11 points, including both of Troy's 3-pointers. Buchanon hit a buzzer-beater from beyond halfcourt to close the halftime gap from 25 to 22 points.
Troy seemed to be building momentum in the second half, but Arkansas State (16-7, 11-2) continued to shoot well. The Red Wolves shot 51 percent (34-of-67) for the game while Troy recovered in the second half to finish at 36 percent (31-of-87) overall.
The Red Wolves hit 7-of-16 3-pointers, including 5-of-9 in the first half. Hanna Qedan made four against the Trojans for the second straight game as she finished with 16 points. Jasmine Hunt shot 9-of-13 from the floor to lead the Red Wolves with 23 points.
Hunt and Khadijah Brown-Haywood each finished with nine rebounds as Arkansas State outrebounded Troy, 48-45. Aundrea Gamble finished with 22 points and eight assists for the Red Wolves.
The Trojans continue their road trip when they travel to take on Appalachian State on Saturday. The Mountaineers lost at UL Lafayette on Thursday night, 70-66. The win by the Ragin' Cajuns moved them into a tie for fourth place in the Sun Belt standings with Troy.
