Women’s Track & Field Returns From Samford Invitational
2/15/2016 10:04:00 AM | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Led by strong performances from the throwers, Troy's women's track and field team set several personal- and season's-best marks on Friday and Saturday's Samford Invitational, which was hosted at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
"We didn't accomplish everything we wanted to this weekend, but we did see progress from a few individuals who capitalized on the opportunity to compete one more time before the Sun Belt Conference championship meet," director Marc Davis said. "Now, they can roll with that momentum next week. As for the people who didn't quite hit the mark this weekend, I'm confident they will use this as a learning experience and be even more motivated to bring their best efforts to the conference meet."
Freshman Indiya Summerville continued her successful season by recording her second-best throw of the year in the shot put, which she launched 13.79 meters (45'3") for fifth place. In the weight throw, junior Allison Taylor tied her lifetime-best mark of 16.48 meters (54'1") to take eighth out of 24 competitors. Junior Nesha DeFoe also had a major breakthrough in the triple jump, where she leapt to a lifetime-best mark of 11.56 meters (37'11.25").
In the women's pole vault, sophomore Carissa Madson made it through her first two attempts without any misses, but was not able to clear her personal-best height of 3.50 meters (11'5.75"), which she set at last weekend's Jaguar Invitational. Madson's 3.35-meter (10'11.75") vault was good for seventh place.
On the track, sophomore Sydney Wright ran the 200-meter dash in 24.81 seconds, which is her fastest performance over that distance this season and the fifth-fastest time recorded among Sun Belt Conference competitors this year. Freshman multi-athlete Gemma Finch also recorded a season's-best time at the meet as she sprinted through the 60-meter hurdles in 9.40 seconds.
Troy's women's track and field team will return to the Birmingham CrossPlex next week to compete at the Sun Belt Conference championship meet on Monday, Feb. 22, and Tuesday, Feb. 23.
