Troy Claims Sun Belt's Community Service Initiative Award for January

NEW ORLEANS - Troy student-athletes worked together on a number of community service projects during the month of January and the Trojans were named the winners of the Sun Belt's Community Service Initiative for the month, the league office announced Tuesday.

The Sun Belt initiative is a monthly competition run by the conference with the team that accumulates the most amounts of monthly victories, winning the overall competition.

Members of the Troy softball team participated in a benefit camp for a local high school student that was recently diagnosed with cancer. The student-athletes daylong involvement resulted in a total of $4,000 being raised.Â

Track and field student-athletes from Troy also did their part as they helped raise $1,550 to give to local chapters of the March of Dimes and the Alzheimer's Association. Student-athletes from the Troy football teams recently volunteered in an "Open Gym" where they played sports and were involved in other activities with elementary aged children from the community.
