Troy Track and Field Wraps Up Competition at KMS Invitational
2/2/2016 10:28:00 AM | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Troy's men's and women's track and field teams concluded competition on Sunday night at the KMS Invitational hosted by the Birmingham CrossPlex. Highlighted by victories in the men's and women's distance-medley relays, the Trojans also saw strong performances from the throwers and returned with new personal- and season's-best marks.
"Across the board, we saw a lot of improvements, and the team is starting to get back in the groove of regular competition since our season opener on January 16," head coach Marc Davis said. "Since the men had last weekend off from competition, it was only their second meet of the year, so I was happy to see many of them capitalize on the opportunity to race, jump and throw better than they did last time."
Troy's throwers continued to dominate the shot put ring with junior Zach Douglas's runner-up finish and freshman Indiya Summerville's fourth-place effort, along with top-ten finishes from freshman Michael Alvernaz and sophomore Jaevyn Wortham in the weight throw. Senior Myles Charley also had a banner day with two season's-best marks: 14.77 meters (48'5.5") for third in the triple jump and 6.92 meters (22'8.5") for fifth in the long jump.
In the men's 600-meter run, freshman Tyson Robinson delivered a precocious performance by racing to third place in 1:20.71. His classmate, multi-athlete Gemma Finch, displayed her versatility in that event with a fifth-place finish in a time of 1:38.49. Finch also took sixth in the high jump with a leap of 1.65 meters (5'5"). In addition, junior Samantha Smith placed fourth in the women's 5000-meter run while sophomore Erika Kulp ran a personal-best to take seventh in the 800-meter run.
Freshman Hakim Montgomery continued his successful season by once again qualifying for finals in the men's 60-meter dash, where he finished seventh overall in a time of 6.86 seconds. Sophomore Sydney Wright also qualified for finals in the women's 60-meter dash and took sixth in a season's best time of 7.66 seconds – just three-hundredths of second away from her fastest mark ever. Her classmate, Niata Alexander, also ran her fastest 200-meter dash of the season in 25.02 seconds. In the men's 200-meter dash, junior Cameron Rice recorded a solid time of 21.96 seconds, which is now his best indoor mark.
On Sunday, the Trojan men and women will travel to the Birmingham CrossPlex again for the Jaguar Invitational hosted by South Alabama.
