HUMBLE, Texas – Clayton Vannoy turned in the best tournament of his career to lead the Troy men's golf team at the All-American Intercollegiate at the Houston Golf Club. Vannoy carded a 5-under 211 en route to a tie for third place, while Troy moved up a spot into sixth place in Sunday's final round.
Vannoy capped his solid tournament with his second straight round of 70 thanks to three birdies and just one bogey. The third place finish was tied for the best of his career, but the highest at a team event as he placed third at the Savannah Quarters Individual Intercollegiate last season.
Troy shot its best round of the weekend on Sunday as Luke Moser also fired a round of 2-under, while Jared Bettcher shot a 72 and the duo of Cam Norman and Calum Masters carded matching 78s. The Trojans moved up a spot on the leaderboard passing No. 47 Charleston Southern for sixth place.
The Trojans, who entered the event ranked 80th by Golfstat, defeated three teams ranked ahead of them, while the five teams who finished ahead of them were all ranked between No. 27 and No. 38 entering the event.
Moser climbed eight spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 12th place thanks to his sixth round under par this year. His round featured three birdies after he opened with bogey on his first hole of the day.
Bettcher also made a decent climb up the individual leaderboard as he jumped nine spots into a tie for 26th place after carding a team-best four birdies on the day. Norman finished the weekend tied for 70th place and Masters finished in a tie for 74th place.
No. 30 Arkansas erased a 22-stroke opening-round defect to rally past host and 38th ranked Houston to win the team title by one stroke over the Cougars. No. 27 South Carolina finished third, No. 34 Baylor placed fourth and No. 32 SMU took home fifth place. Arkansas' Taylor Moore won the individual crown with a 9-under 207.
Troy will take a little time off before a busy eight-day stretch when the Trojans will play at a pair of events. The Trojans will first head to the Tiger Invitational hosted by Auburn on March 6-8 before traveling down to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Seminole Intercollegiate on March 11-13.
