HAMMOND, Louisiana – The Troy baseball team defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 3-2, in game one of a three game series at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alumni Field on Friday night.
Â
With Troy (6-0) up 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning and the bases loaded with one out, Corey Childress struck a batter out and got a fielder's choice that clinched the victory for the Trojans and gave Childress his third save of the season.
Â
"We had a great pitching performance by Grant, Marc and Corey," Mark Smartt said. "They all showed great composure and toughness in critical moments in the game. We are competing well and I'm proud to get a good Friday night road win against a quality team."
Â
The Trojans got off to a fast start and put up two runs in the first inning. Sanders hit a one out single up the middle, followed by a Trevor Davis single to left field that gave Troy runners at first and second. After a fly out to left field, Reid Long delivered a two-out double to right field that scored Sanders and Davis and gave the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
Â
Southeastern Louisiana (3-2) manufactured a run in the third inning with back-to-back singles, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to first that drove in Brennan Breaud and cut the Trojan lead in half.
Â
Joey Denison reached on a single, stole second and third in the sixth inning before Chase Smartt drove him in with an RBI single to left field and extended the Troy lead to 3-1.
