Oregon State Too Big for Troy in NCAA First Round
3/18/2016 7:30:00 PM | Basketball (W)
CORVALLIS, Oregon – The 2-seed Oregon State had too much size for the 15-seed Troy to handle, and the Trojans fell to the Beavers, 73-31, in the NCAA First Round on Friday at Gill Coliseum.
Troy (20-13) finishes its season after playing in just the second NCAA Championships in program history, and the first since 1997. Troy also won 20 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history and led the Sun Belt in scoring for the fourth straight season. All that after winning just two games four years ago.
On Friday against sixth-ranked Oregon State (29-4), the Troy offense never got going against a Beavers' roster that featured seven players 6-foot-3 or taller. The Beavers outrebounded Troy, 65-42, and outscored the Trojans in paint, 44-8.
Troy did hold Jamie Weisner, the Pac-12 Player of the Year, to just two points on 1-of-7 shooting, but 6-foot-6 Ruth Hamblin had 18 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks.
Ashley Beverly Kelley and Kristen Emerson each scored nine points to lead Troy. Beverly Kelley, Troy's lone senior, finishes her career with 1,973 career points, the second most in Troy history and tied for the ninth most in Sun Belt history.
Beverly Kelley finishes as Troy's all-time career leader in games played, free throws made, free throw percentage and steals. She also finishes as the school's Division I-era leader in scoring.
Emerson had a career game for the Trojans, finishing just one off of her career high in scoring. The junior also added eight rebounds and four blocks, bring her career total to 101 rejections, just the sixth Trojan to ever go over the century mark.
The Trojans shot a season-low 16 percent (12-of-74) overall and made just 3-of-22 from long range. Troy's 31 points were the fewest in a game in Chanda Rigby's four seasons, coming against an OSU team that leads the country in field goal percentage defense.
Troy held its own defensively, especially after allowing OSU to shoot 10-of-16 in a 23-point first quarter. The Trojans held the Beavers to 50 points and 36 percent shooting over the final three quarters. Troy also forced Oregon State into 18 turnovers, but scored just 11 points off of the miscues.
The Trojans now look ahead to 2016-17 when they will lose Beverly Kelley, a three-time All-Sun Belt selection, but that is all. Troy will enter next season with eight seniors on its roster that have all now played in the NCAA Championships.
