TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Led by junior Corina Cox's runner-up finish in the discus and a number of outstanding performances by the throwers, the Trojans concluded day three of the John Mitchell Alabama Relays on Saturday with several season's and personal-best marks.
"We're thrilled by Cori's success today in the discus – that was a huge step forward that significantly improved her national ranking, and we know there's more where that came from," director Davis said. "As for a lot of our other athletes, we saw some signs of progress and areas that require additional work, but nothing out of the ordinary for this early stage of the outdoor season as we continue to train in preparation for the men's and women's conference meets. I'm eager to see more and more fall into place as we proceed with the season."
Cox, who earned All-American status and competed at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the discus last year, eclipsed her previous personal-best distance by nearly three meters this weekend with a 56.04-meters (183'10") toss. Her throw was less than a meter behind the winning mark of 56.85 meters, which was thrown by Ole Miss's Raven Saunders.
Freshman Indiya Summerville continued the throwers' success by nearly setting a new personal-best mark in the shot put by taking sixth out of 35 competitors with a toss that traveled 14.22 meters (46'7.8"). In her third meet as a Trojan, sophomore Helga Volgyi took fifth in the hammer throw.
On the men's side, junior Zach Douglas grabbed third in the shot put with a 17.52-meter (57'5.75") throw. In the hammer throw, redshirt senior TJ Servino broke the 200-foot barrier for the first time ever with an eighth-place effort of 61.16 meters (200'8").
The sprinters also turned in a number of great performances, including sophomore Sydney Wright, who crossed the line third in the invitational section of the 100-meter dash. In the men's invitational section, senior Benjamin Martin recorded a time of 10.65 seconds to take fifth.
In the pole vault, sophomore C.J. Phillips leapt to a season's-best height of 4.30 meters (14'1"), while his classmate Carissa Madson established a new personal-best height of 3.55 meters (11'7.76").
The Trojans will return to action next weekend at the University of North Florida Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida.
