Troy Women’s Tennis Set for Big Showdown with South Alabama
3/29/2016 12:20:00 PM | Tennis (W)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's tennis team will host its biggest match of the season on Wednesday when No. 43 South Alabama visits the Lunsford Tennis Complex. First serve between the Trojans and in-state rival Jaguars is set for 3 p.m. and admission to the match is free.
Troy (10-4, 2-0) and South Alabama (16-4, 3-0) are both unbeaten in Sun Belt play and Wednesday's match will go a long way in determining seeding for the Sun Belt Championships, which begin in just three weeks.
The Trojans have won five of their last six matches and are coming off of a 4-2 win over Appalachian State at home last Thursday. Troy's other Sun Belt win came in early March against ULM, a team that entered that match undefeated on the season.
Troy is led in singles play by Sanae Ohta and Nancy Karaky who have posted 9-2 and 10-3 records this season, respectively. Ohta has played exclusively at No. 3 in the lineup and has won six straight matches, while Karaky has played at No. 5 and has won five straight.
The sophomores have combined to post a 9-3 doubles record, the best mark by any Trojan pairing this season.
South Alabama climbed two spots to No. 43 in the ITA National Team Rankings this week after wins over Miami (OH) and Georgia Southern last week. The win over Georgia Southern came on Friday in a neutral court match at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
The defending Sun Belt champion Jaguars have won six straight matches and 15 of their last 16 with the lone loss coming at Santa Clara in late February.
The Jaguars are led by freshman Alexandria Stiteler who is 15-1 in singles play this spring and is ranked No. 65 in the ITA National Singles Rankings.
Following Wednesday's match, Troy will host Alabama A&M on Saturday at 1 p.m. in its final home match of the season.
