TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's golf team has been publically recognized by the NCAA for outstanding performance in the classroom, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon.
"The number one goal of the Troy Athletics Department is to see all of our student-athletes receive their degrees at the end of their collegiate careers," Athletics Director Jeremy McClain said. "This public recognition from the NCAA is a testament to the hard work of our women's golf team in the classroom, and we could not be more proud of their accomplishments both academically and athletically."
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, the teams recognized today by the NCAA posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Not only has the Troy women's golf program been an academic leader in the Sun Belt Conference, the Trojans have also led the league on the course. Troy has won back-to-back Sun Belt Championships paced by two-time All-Sun Belt First Team selection Fátima Fernández Cano.
The Trojans enter this year's Sun Belt Championship, which opens on Sunday, with three team victories on the year, the lowest round shot this year by a Sun Belt team by nine strokes and a No. 86 national ranking.
