TROY, Alabama – Super Bowl champion and former Troy Trojan great DeMarcus Ware was honored by the state of Alabama, Troy University and the city of Troy on Tuesday, April 19, as it was officially DeMarcus Ware Day throughout the state. Ware was recognized as an Alabama native and a Troy Trojan for his role in Super Bowl 50 and his stellar NFL career.
DeMarcus Ware Day culminated with a special ceremony in Trojan Arena beginning where Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., presented Ware with the Troy Distinguished Leadership Award and Troy Mayor Jason Reeves presented Ware with a key to the city.
Earlier in the day, Ware became the first Super Bowl winning player to be honored with a special proclamation from the state of Alabama as Governor Robert Bentley at the Capitol Building. Ware also addressed a special joint session of the Alabama Legislature before and was named an honorary Lieutenant Governor.
Ware, a member of the inaugural class of the Troy University Sports Hall of Fame, played a vital role in Denver's run to the Super Bowl 50 title.
In the AFC Championship Game against New England, Ware sacked Tom Brady twice, put the former MVP quarterback on his back seven times and hurried him on four other occasions. In the Super Bowl, Ware sacked MVP Cam Newton twice and recorded five tackles in the Broncos' 24-10 victory.
Ware was selected with the 11th pick of the 2005 NFL Draft and spent the first nine years of his career with the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Broncos prior to the 2014 season. He has made nine Pro Bowl appearances, been named All-Pro seven times and was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.
While at Troy, Ware was instrumental in Troy's transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2001 and finished his Trojan career as the program's all-time leader in tackles for loss with 55.5. He finished his career with 27 sacks for a loss of 198 yards to rank among the all-time greats in Troy history.
Ware, who was named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Decade Team, was named the 2004 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year and helped lead the Trojans to their first-ever bowl game with an appearance in the Silicon Valley Football Classic. That season, Ware made 53 tackles, 19 for a loss, and his 10.5 sacks led the Sun Belt Conference.
