Men’s Hoops Adds Juan Davis, Jr.

TROY, Alabama – Troy men's basketball head coach Phil Cunningham announced Thursday the signing of 6-foot-8 forward Juan Davis, Jr. He is the second player to sign with the Trojans during the late signing period and the third player in the class.

"One of our three major needs in recruiting this spring was to sign an athletic forward, and we're excited because Juan definitely meets that need," Cunningham said. "He has really good size, and he is a versatile scorer who can shoot the three and score in the paint. He also has the potential to be a terrific rebounder and defender because of his athleticism."

Davis averaged 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks this past season for former Troy assistant coach Billy Begley at East Mississippi Community College. A native of West Point, Miss., Davis shot 56 percent from the floor and 32.7 percent from 3-point range as he went on to earn second team all-state honors. He was also named to the NJCAA Region 23 All-Tournament Team after averaging 15.0 points and 6.3 rebounds in the Lions' run to the region title game.

"Juan is a high-character young man with a strong academic background, and he hails from a close-knit family who has helped him get to where he is today as an outstanding student-athlete," Cunningham said. "We completely trust Coach Begley's opinion, and Billy raves about Juan on and off the court."

As a freshman, Davis started 19 games for the Lions and averaged 5.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. East Mississippi posted a combined 38-17 record in his two seasons and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament this past year.

Davis joins guards Kevin Baker (Pensacola State) and Darian Adams (Carver HS) in Troy's signing class. Troy returns four starters from this past year's squad including two-time All-Sun Belt selection Wesley Person and Jordon Varnado, who had a breakout freshman season.
