5/1/2016 3:26:00 PM | Baseball
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State scattered four runs throughout the game as the Troy baseball team dropped a 4-1 contest on Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
Troy (25-19, 11-10 Sun Belt) could only salvage one run, which came in the fourth inning as Joey Denison drove in Brandon Lockridge on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Â
Texas State (23-22, 11-10 Sun Belt) scored the first two runs of the game in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead. The run in the first came off back-to-back doubles from the Bobcats. The run in the second came on a suicide squeeze bunt by Luke Sherley.
Â
Troy had chances to tie the game, but left runners on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Trojans left two on in the fifth as Cameron Sanders led off the inning with a single up the middle, followed by Chase Smartt reaching on an error.
Â
Matt Sanders led off the sixth inning with a single up the middle, but a fielder's choice, groundout and strikeout ended the inning leaving one on the base paths.
Â
The best chance came in the seventh when Smartt singled up the middle with one out and advanced the third on a two-out double down the left field line by Peyton Fuller. A groundout to the leaping pitcher ended the scoring threat for the Trojans.
Â
In the bottom half of the seventh, the Bobcats tacked on a run via a Jonathan Ortega single that made the score 3-1 and another run scored in the eighth inning, which gave the Bobcats a 4-1 lead.
Â
The Trojans had the tying run at the plate with one out in the ninth, but a strikeout and a groundout were the final two outs of the game.
Â
Smartt and Cameron Sanders had 2-for-4 games, while three other Trojans had one hit. Lockridge and Fuller had a double each for the Trojans only extra base hits, while Denison had the lone RBI.
Â
Houston Mabray (3-2) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He pitched six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. The junior only allowed one walk and struck out one. Robert Harris and Marc Skinner made appearances out of the bullpen and pitched an inning each.
Â
The Trojans will travel to Montgomery to face Alabama State on Wednesday night at 6 p.m., before returning home for a three game series against ULM.
