Cano Named Sun Belt Golfer of the Year

TROY, Alabama -- Troy junior Fátima Fernández Cano capped a record-breaking season by being named the Sun Belt Conference Female Golfer of the Year, the league office announced Monday morning.
Cano becomes the first Troy golfer – male or female – to earn Sun Belt Golfer of the Year honors and the first women's golfer in the school's Division I history to earn a golfer of the year award.
"Fátima put together a remarkable season from start to finish and I don't think there is anyone in the league that was more deserving," Troy head coach Bart Barnes said. "It was truly one of the most dominating seasons that I have ever seen with her five wins plus her stroke average and other numbers."
Cano earned an at-large berth into the NCAA East Regional after the Trojans just missed out on their third-straight appearance as a team. She entered her third NCAA Regional ranked 18th nationally with a 72.15 stroke average and tied for 19th with a +0.35 score versus par. A native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Cano was one of the best in the country on par-4 holes as she entered the Regional ranked fifth with a 4.05 average for the year.
She finished the season with a 72.79 stroke average to break her own school record by 1.07 strokes. She now has three of the four lowest single-season stroke averages in school history, while her 74.07 career stroke average is 2.59 strokes better than any other golfer in school history.
Additionally, Cano set Troy records for lowest 36-hole and 54-hole scores after shooting an 8-under 136 and an 8-under 208 at the Samford Intercollegiate.
Cano won five of her 10 tournaments on the year and posted an average finish of 5.2 leading into the NCAA East Regional. She finished the year with 10 of her 29 rounds under par and with five rounds in the 60s.
