5/28/2016 8:30:00 PM | Track & Field
JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The Troy outdoor track and field competition at the NCAA East Preliminaries concluded on Satruday, but not before Jaevyn Wortham qualified for a spot in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Â
"I'm proud of how the Trojans competed this week," Marc Davis said. "Although we only have one continuing on, we did have many positives. Like I've been saying all season, we have a young team. All but one of the athletes, Ben Martin, will be retuning next year to compete. We also are bringing in more great athletes to continue the rebuilding process. We set out this season to have people notice that the Troy Trojans were improving. We've accomplished that. Now, going into next year, we are striving for more to the NCAA meet. We have the experience. Now we need to execute once we get here."
Â
Wortham finished with a 52.96-meter discus throw and finished in eighth place. The top 12 finishes qualify for the NCAA Championships, which begin on June 8th. The throw set a new personal best for the sophomore and came at a perfect time this season.
Â
Hakim Montgomery qualified for the quarterfinals in the 100-meter dash. The top three finishers plus the next best six times qualified for the quarterfinals. Martin finished fourth in the third heat, but his 10.53 time qualified him for the final spot in the quarterfinals.
Â
In the quarterfinals, Montgomery finished with a 10.41 finish, the 12th best time out of 24 athletes. However, the top three from each quarter and the next best three times advance to Eugene. Montgomery finished fifth in his quarter and Nick Gray from Ohio State qualified with the 13th best time because he finished third in his quarter.
Â
Corina Cox was the other Trojan to compete in women's discus competition. The 2015 NCAA All-American finished with a 47.72-meter throw, which did not qualify her for the NCAA Championships.
Â
Zach Douglas was the lone thrower that competed in the men's shot put and discus competition. He finished the shot put with a 17.63-meter throw, which was the 21st best throw on the meet. He committed a foul in the discus competition and did not place.
Â
The men's 4x100-meter relays competed well, but finished 22nd with a 40.45 time.
Â
Stay tuned for more information on Wortham and the NCAA Championships, which begin on Wednesday, June 8th and ends Saturday, June 11th.
