Troy Baseball Defeats Alabama State in Pitchers Duel
5/4/2016 9:05:00 PM | Baseball
MONTGOMERY, Alabama – Troy used three pitchers in a low scoring 3-1 victory over Alabama State on Wednesday night at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex in Montgomery, Ala.
Â
Cory Gill (3-2) picked up the win and pitched seven innings, only allowed one run on five hits and struck out five for Troy (26-19). He had good command and only walked one and hit one. The one hit by pitch came with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and was the only run Alabama State (31-15) scored.
Â
Marc Skinner and Corey Childress pitched an inning each for the Trojans. Skinner came in for the eighth inning and gave up a leadoff single, but got the next batter to ground into a double play and struck out the final batter of the inning.
Â
Childress picked up his 10th save of the season and is now tied for second place all-time at Troy in single season saves. He only gave up one two-out hit, but struck out two in a 16-pitch inning.
Â
Cameron Sanders was the story for the Trojans offensively going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. His two-run single came in the third inning and was all the offense the Trojans needed.
Â
Hoke Granger hit a one-out double off the wall in left field for his first hit of the season, and the only extra-base hit for the Trojans in the game. After a strikeout, Brandon Lockridge singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw to home plate. That left runners at second and third for Sanders, who delivered the two-out knock.
Â
The third and final run of the game for Troy came in the top of the ninth inning when Steven Whitaker scored from second on a dropped fly ball by the Hornet shortstop with two outs.
Â
Brandon Caples (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, but had a quality start. He pitched eight innings, allowed two runs on six hits, only allowed one walk and struck out seven.
Â
The Trojans will return to the diamond on Friday as they welcome Sun Belt conference foe ULM to Riddle-Pace Field for a weekend series. First pitch of the series is slated for 6 p.m.
