TROY, Alabama – Troy's Leah Brundidge was named one of five Sun Belt Conference Postgraduate Scholarship recipients, while Ashley Beverly Kelley was named to the Sun Belt Conference Leadership Team, the league office announced Wednesday morning.
Brundidge is on track to graduate with honors this summer with her bachelor's degree in sport and fitness management. A four-year letterwinner for the Troy softball team, Brundidge will begin graduate school at Troy in pursuit of her Master's in Business Administration this upcoming fall with aspirations of working in collegiate athletics.
Brundidge appeared in over 100 games during her Trojan career and made an even bigger impact off the field as she volunteered countless number of hours to the Troy community. The native of Brewton, Ala., worked with Relay for Life, Christian Love Center, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and was a member of the Sun Belt Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Additionally, Brundidge was recently selected to be among a group of 200 student-athletes to attend the NCAA Career in Sports Forum this summer at the NCAA national office. Brundidge was twice named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar Athlete and was named captain of the Troy softball team.
The Sun Belt awards five student-athletes $3,000 each for their future education. Recipients are selected by the Sun Belt Post Graduate Scholarship Committee. Funding for the scholarships comes from the Sun Belt Conference's primary bowl partners - the R+L Carriers New Orleans, the GoDaddy.com Bowl, the Raycom Camellia Bowl, and the AutoNation Cure Bowl.
Beverly Kelley will go down as one of the best players in Troy women's basketball history. The Adamsville, Ala., native is just the fourth player in Troy's history with three all-conference selections, and just the second with multiple first team selections. In addition to leading the Sun Belt in scoring in all games (19.9), she also led the way in Sun Belt games with 21.5 points per game.
A Mid-Major All-American, Beverly Kelley is also an outstanding student-athlete off the court. During her career at Troy, Beverly Kelley spent countless hours mentoring local youth both about the game of basketball and their lives off the court. She was an Allstate WBCA Good Works Nominee and a Senior CLASS Award candidate.
Beverly Kelley scored in double figures 29 times her senior season, including 18 games with 20-plus points. Beverly Kelley finished her career with 1,973 points, the most in Troy's Division I history, second most in its all-time history and the ninth most in Sun Belt history.
The Sun Belt Conference Leadership Team aims to recognize one individual from each institution that exemplifies the highest qualities of being a true student-athlete. This award shall be given to a letterwinning student-athlete, based on leadership, sportsmanship, community service, citizenship, academic excellence and any other qualities valued by the institution.
