TROY – Several Troy football players entered a classroom in Veterans Memorial Stadium Wednesday to lunge, plank, stand on one foot and jump.
As odd as it sounds, those activities could eventually help the Trojans avoid injuries and even improve their athletic performances.
The Trojans football program is one of the first few U.S. college units to utilize DorsaVi, a "cutting edge" movement analysis system, said Trent Nessler, national director of sports medicine innovation for Select Medical. Select Medical is the parent company of Champion Sports Medicine, the Trojans' long-time athletic training and sports medicine provider.
"Everybody is looking to integrate technologies in ways that you can assess athletic movement and do injury prediction and make changes to those movements based off the information," Nessler said. "Folks have tried to do it with video alone, and it's challenging because it's very subjective. People have tried to do it with Connect, which is not very sensitive.
"This is the first wearable sensor technology on the market that has the degree of accuracy that this stuff has."
Nessler said heavy research into movement science in relation to sports began 12 to 15 years ago.
DorsaVi, a technology developed in Australia, emerged following the research boom and arrived in the United States less than two years ago.
Only a few organizations have begun to use it. DorsaVi's website documents one other college, the College of Southern Idaho, has used it for its basketball team.
"There are some NFL teams that are using it. There are some NBA teams that are using it," Nessler said. "This would actually be one of the first colleges."
