TROY, Alabama – Troy junior wide receiver John Johnson has been selected as a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Wuerffel Trophy, both organizations announced Wednesday morning.
Now in its 25th year, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established to recognize a select group of college football players who have made a commitment to service and enriching the lives of others. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.
For 25 years, the players selected have carried on the award's mission by demonstrating that 'good works' extend beyond the football field. This year's nominees uphold impressive service resumes detailing inspiring stories of servitude and the exceptional ability to balance academics with athletics, while donating their limited free time and energy to helping others.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
A native of Troy, Johnson has not shied away from giving back to the community that raised him. The Charles Henderson High School graduate has spearheaded several community initiatives for the Troy football team including Read Across America, Habitat for Humanity and Troy's inaugural Bench Out for Breast Cancer.
Additionally, Johnson is the football team's representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Troy won the Sun Belt Conference's January Community Service Award thanks in part to Johnson's leadership which led to the development of an open gym for area youth and a male empowerment program at Charles Henderson Middle School to focus on at risk youth males.
On the field, Johnson has played in all 24 games since stepping on Troy's campus as a true freshman in 2014. He started seven games last season for the Trojans and earned a starting position coming out of spring practice.
In honor of the 25th anniversary, Allstate and the AFCA will add three additional spots to this year's team and announce a final roster of 25 members in September. For the first time in the award's history, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® will be comprised of 12 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, 12 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA and an honorary head coach.
Troy opens the 2016 season on Sept. 3 when it plays host to Austin Peay in the first of six home games in Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by contacting the Troy Ticket Office online at TroyTrojans.com, by phone at 877-878-WINS or in person at the Tine Davis Fieldhouse.
