Alabama Slips Past Troy in Exhibition
8/14/2016 1:59:00 PM | Soccer
ORANGE BEACH, Alabama – Alabama scored on a penalty kick in the 90th minute to edge Troy, 2-1, in an exhibition match at the Orange Beach Sportsplex on Sunday.
Â
Troy leveled the score just seconds earlier when senior Nicole Harris lofted a free kick into the box where Brooke McKee headed it into the net. The Trojans took six shots on the day, five on goal.
Â
"Alabama were the better team," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "You can tell their group took advantage of having a game on Thursday and fixed some small things."
Two-time All-Sun Belt goalkeeper Mikki Lewis posted a clean sheet in the first half before being subbed out. Alabama managed just five shots against the Trojan defense in the first 45 minutes, but recorded 14 in the second half.
Â
The Crimson Tide's Lacey Clarida opened the scoring in the 61st minute with a headed goal on a corner kick from Christina Martensson. 22 seconds after Troy tied the game and just 40 seconds remaining in the match, Alabama was awarded and converted a penalty to clinch the contest.
Â
"It was good for our group to get to play against an opponent, especially one as quality as Alabama," Hamilton said.
Â
"The disappointing part is to give up two goals on set pieces which we put such a big emphasis on. To have a penalty kick called in the last minute really felt like the game was taken out of the players hands."
Â
Troy opens the 2016 season on the road against Gardner-Webb (Aug. 19) and Samford (Aug. 21). The team's home opener is set for Aug. 26 against Belmont in the Trojan Classic.
