Trojans Stay Sharp In Second Meet Of The Season
9/10/2016 8:57:00 AM | Cross Country
MOBILE, Alabama – The Troy men's cross country team continued the hot start to the season with three head-to-head victories at the Azalea City Classic on Friday.
Â
"Our men did some things we haven't done since I've been at Troy," head coach Elliott Blount said. "We put together two solid performances in consecutive showings as a team. The purpose of this meet was to sharpen up our race tactics and we did just that."
Â
The Trojans, running in the 8k, beat Alabama State 15 to 50, Southeast Louisiana 15 to 48 and a narrow 28 to 29 victory over South Alabama.
Â
Troy also had two top-ten finishes with Bradley Dixon clocking in at 25:50.80 for seventh place and Ryan Degale at 26:08.22 for 10th.
Â
Five more runners landed in the top-20 with Sawyer Sprung (26:08.43) at 11th, Brennan Garriques (26:16.92) at 12th, Zachary Bias (26:55.90) at 15th, Timothy Bulger (27:29.50) at 19th and rounded out with Eric Schueller (27:32.83) at 20th.
Â
Despite an 11th place finish in the women's 5k event from Samantha Smith at 23:33.92, the Trojans were unable to capitalize and settled with five-runner up finishes.
Â
"Our women's team is still doing a bit of identity search," Blount said. "We have to put our fear aside, look within and just get back to basics. We are at a fork and have to decide which way we'll take and this will determine how we compete next time out."
Â
Erika Kulp and Sara Zylstra were the other two Trojans to notch top-20 finishes. Kulp came in 17th with a time of 25:04.98 and Zylstra placed 19th at 25:10.22.
Â
Troy will be back in action in the first home meet of the season on September 24 at the Trojan XC Invitational in Dothan, Ala.
