Troy Soccer Edged by No. 1 Florida State
9/11/2016 6:44:00 PM | Soccer
TALLAHASSEE, Florida – Top-ranked Florida State scored 52 seconds into overtime to edge out a 1-0 victory over Troy at the Seminole Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The Trojans defended well allowing just three shots to challenge goalkeeper Mikki Lewis in regulation. Kiersten Edlund put the only shot on goal for Troy.
In the first minute of overtime, Florida State's Kristen McFarland chested in the game-winner off a headed pass from Kirsten Crowley.
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Troy survived a scare in the 57th minute when Florida State's Megan Connolly hit the crossbar on a shot from the top of the penalty box. It was just the second clear chance on goal the Seminoles had in the game.
QUOTABLE
"I'm extremely proud of how our girls battled today," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "We took one of the best teams in the country to overtime at their place and we are going to walk away with our heads high; that is a big confidence booster heading into conference play.
UP NEXT
Troy (4-4-1) returns home for three games after four straight road matches. The Trojans open Sun Belt Conference play by welcoming Appalachian State (Sept. 16), Arkansas State (Sept. 18) and UL Lafayette (Sept. 25).
NOTEWORTHY
• The match between Troy and Florida State was the second in the history of the programs. FSU won the previous meeting, 8-0, in 2007.
• Troy hadn't played consecutive overtime matches since 2013.
• Florida State had not gone into overtime against a non-conference opponent in the regular season since 2014.
