Cross Country Wins First Meet Of The Season
9/24/2016 10:53:00 PM | Cross Country
DOTHAN, Ala. – The Troy Trojans raced for the first time at home on Saturday and came away with a victory and a second place finish. The Troy men had an average of 29:00.09 in the 8k race for the win over Miles while the women averaged 21:09.47 in the 5k event to finish behind Georgia State.
The six runners on the men's side took every top-six position in the win. Sophomore Zachary Bias came in first with a time of 27:55.58. Junior Eric Schueller came in second just behind Bias with a time of 28:08.90.
John Webb, Chance Roe, Timothy Bulger and Christian Anderton rounded out the rest of the top-six, in order.
The women relied on a mix of largely freshmen and seniors to finish about 1:20 behind the average time of first place Georgia State.
Senior Samantha Smith recorded her first top-five finish of the year by coming in fourth with a time of 20:01.90. Troy had two more top-10 finishers in junior Sarah Zylstra, 20:56.52, at eighth place and freshman Erika Kulp, 21:09.92, at ninth.
Quotable
"The men continue to progress and show signs of being a complete team," head coach Elliott Blount said. "We were able to come away with the victory in our first defense of the home course while sitting out key players. I do anticipate a few who competed today to help us out against tougher foes, but today was a day to get a win.
Our women showed signs of life after a tough start to the season. It was very hot out there so basing the performance on time wouldn't be prudent. Our effort was there. There is still a lot a work to do over the course of the next two meets but definitely a step forward."
Stat of the Game
Out of the six runners on the men's side, three of them, Webb, Roe and Anderton, are freshman and the victor, Bias, is a sophomore.
