TROY, Alabama - Troy freshman running back Jabir Frye has been named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
He is the second Trojan to earn the honor this season as senior kicker Ryan Kay was named Special Teams Player of the Week last week for his performance in Troy's win against Southern Miss.
Frye, a native of Pensacola, Fla., made a pair of great plays in the conference opener against New Mexico State this past Saturday to help the Trojans to a 52-6 win.
He made his first explosive play of the game in the second quarter as he blocked a punt that linebacker Demetrius Cain returned for a touchdown to push the Trojans' lead to 21-0 on the Aggies. Frye's block was the first blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown for Troy since 2013 against ULM.
Frye also returned the opening kickoff of the second half 100 yards for a touchdown. Frye's return was the 10th in Sun Belt Conference history and third in Troy's FBS history to span 100 yards. He joins Troy greats Leodis McKelvin and Jerrel Jernigan as the only players to return a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown.
The Trojans travel across the country to face Sun Belt opponent Idaho on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (CDT) and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
