TROY, Alabama – Corey Childress delivered an impressive start on the mound to spark the Phillips Heads to a 2-1 victory over the Fighting Gierkes to even the series Wednesday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
Childress struck out five and did not walk any in five innings of work, while allowing only one run on one hit.
Will Carnley earned the save after working two scoreless innings – he struck out two batters and gave up one hit.
The lone run by the Gierkes came on a sixth-inning, game-tying home run from Brandon Lockridge, who has homered in both games of the series. The Gierkes only other hit came when Manning Early attempted to spur a two-out rally in the ninth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Chase Smartt gave the Phillips Heads the lead for good on a sacrifice fly – Smartt ended 1-for-2. Joey Denison, Brody Binder and Tyler Head each added a hit to aid the Phillips Heads' four-hit effort.
CJ Carter suffered the loss for the Gierkes after giving up two runs – none earned – while striking out six and giving up only one hit.
The final game of the three-game set is scheduled for 3:30 Thursday afternoon. Daren Osby will answer the bell for the Fighting Gierkes, and Levi Thomas will take the mound for the Phillips Heads.
