Troy Softball Falls to Michigan State; Earns Big Win Against NC State

BOCA RATON, Florida - Trojans continued play in Boca Raton, Fla., in the FAU "Kick –Off" Classic with games against Michigan State and NC State. Troy split the day falling to Michigan State 9-4, but they bounced back to beat NC State 5-3. Troy now moves to 2-2 on the season.
Troy 4, Michigan State 9
Troy got off to an early start as they faced Michigan State in the first match-up of the day. The Spartans got their bats going early as they brought in three runs in the first inning and two runs in the second before Troy could get on the board.
In the bottom of the second, freshman Katie Webb got on base with a walk and sophomore Stephanie Snyder delivered a huge double to score Webb from first cutting the Spartans' lead to 5-1.
Both teams had scoreless third and fourth innings, but Michigan State drove in two more runs in the fifth.
The Trojans started to rally in the sixth inning as the defense made three quick outs to hold the Spartans scoreless. At the plate, singles from senior Becca Hartley and sophomore Maddie Porter got runners on base with only one out. A wild pitch allowed Hartley to score for the Trojans.
In the final inning, Michigan State hit a two run homer, giving them a 9-2 lead. The Trojans continued rallying and loaded the bases with singles from Snyder and Kaylee Hussey and a fielding error from Michigan State. Freshman Grace Mirly entered the game to pinch run for Snyder and scored on the Spartan error. Jordan Gray pinch ran for Hussey and scored as Erica Davis grounded out to third base.
Troy's comeback fell short as Michigan State beat the Trojans 9-4.
Senior Rachel Rigney Brown got the start in the circle and pitched two innings earning one strikeout and giving up six hits. She was relieved in the third inning by sophomore Claire Graves, who threw the remaining five innings. Graves earned one strikeout and gave up eight hits.
Troy 5, NC State 3
NC State was able to capitalize early on walked batters as the scored three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead against the Trojans. Troy got on the board in the second inning with a single from Katie Webb and a bunt from Stephanie Snyder. An error by the Wolfpack advanced Webb to third and Snyder to second. Freshman Brooke Echols hit a pop up to second base, but Webb was able to bring in a run closing in on NC State's 3-1 lead.
From the second inning on, it was all Troy softball. The defense did not allow another NC State player to score in the game.
In the fourth inning, Kaylee Hussey singled to right field. A couple of walks and hit by pitches loaded the bases and allowed Troy to score two runs, giving them a 5-3 win over the Wolfpack.
Peyton Glover started in the circle for the Trojans, but was relieved by Rachel Rigney after getting in a jam with the bases loaded. Rigney recorded seven innings only allowing five hits and earning three strikeouts to get the win.

The Trojans close out the FAU Tournament as they face Bethune-Cookman on Sunday. The game is set to begin at 10:15 a.m. CT

- "I thought our team did a great job of fighting back after the first game," head coach Beth Mullins said. "Rachel Rigney had a gritty performance on the mound, and we had some solid offense behind her. We have a lot of things to improve on from today, but I was really proud of the fight this team has."
